Indian Rock Park: Ancient volcanic remnants in Berkeley

Most neighborhoods boast a playground with swing set and climbing structure, but one North Berkeley’s neighborhood just above Solano Avenue has something far different. It’s called Indian Rock Park, made up of natural weathered rock for climbing, with nearby seating and play areas for kids and a view of the surrounding neighborhood, Berkeley, Albany, Richmond, and the Bay waters beyond.

Outcroppings like those found in Indian Rock Park are quite common in the Berkeley Hills, and Native Ohlone communities once gathered here to ground their meal in the natural depressions found in the ancient volcanic remnants. Today, Indian Rock is a popular destination for amateur rock climbers, who practice the sport alongside one of the tall rock faces. In fact, Indian Rock plays a big role in rock climbing history, being the place where rock-climbing legend Dick Leonard learned the sport and the place where environmentalist David Brower developed mountaineering techniques used by the U.S. Army in World War II.

Locals like to come here to sit and chat, coming up the pathway from lunch on Solano Avenue to digest a meal, and parents often bring the kids for some fresh air and outdoor adventure. Watch the little ones along the rock face, which can get pretty steep, though stairs have also been chiseled along the edge to make the trek up easier.

Other features of Indian Rock Park include nearby walking trails, climbing trees, bench seating as well as seating carved into rock formations, a grassy lawn, a picnic area with BBQ access, and shorter, flatter climbing areas for toddlers to roam on. There are some cavernous spaces along the base of the rock for exploration, and several nearby paths will take you into the surrounding neighborhoods.

Relatively small in size, Indian Rock Park is just over an acre large. It was dedicated to the City of Berkeley in 1917.

HelloOakland Tip: Nearby attractions to Indian Rock Park include Point Isabel, Oaks Theater, Albany Twin Theater, Zachary’s Pizza, U.C. Berkeley, Tilden Park, and a range of restaurants and specialty shops on Solano Avenue.
